138 Miner, Henry 613 My George of the Jungle Bucket is a predominantly darker colored plant mix with fillers and spillers including the Roller Coaster Valravn Violet, the Compact Purple SunPatiens, and the Down Town Dallas Coleus. The darker theme is continued with the thriller of the Purple Baron, but competed against with a unique choice of a Pineapple Guava tree. The two were specifically chosen to be of similar heights, with the tree acting as a lighter-colored plant to combat the rest of the mix. Additionally, as the tree is situated in the middle of the mix, if the tree continues to grow or even fruits, the tree will represent a victory of light over darkness as it dwarfs the rest of the plants. Horticulture / Trees / 01: Broadleaf Tree
138 Miner, Henry 610 This tree is an American Sweetgum that I received from The Jonsteen Company on June 30th. Although I have over thirty trees from the Jonsteen Company altogether, the American Sweetgum is only the fifth broadleaf deciduous tree that I have purchased as their broadleaf trees have repeatedly shown signs of disease and prematurely lost their leaves. Still, the American Sweetgum currently sits in a plastic terracotta pot in the same way as the other trees, but unlike the other trees, truly lends little to no help in determining its age. While the trunk of the tree is nice and woody with impressive bark all the way to the top, the tree is rather columnar and spindly where it should be pyramidal. As a result, I estimate the tree to be somewhere between one and two-years-old, although it is very difficult to say where exactly it falls on this spectrum. As expected for one of the company’s broadleaf trees, the American Sweetgum showed browning on nearly all leaves across both of its age groups upon arrival, although the tree itself still appeared to be healthy. At the moment, the tree’s condition has neither improved or worsened, leading me to believe that the tree simply suffered some form of shipping damage and has no underlying conditions. It is impossible to evaluate the validity of this assumption at present, but I believe the state of the tree will become evident in the coming months as we approach Autumn. Horticulture / Trees / 02: Evergreen tree
138 Miner, Henry 599 This tree is a Serbian Spruce. I purchased the tree from the Californian e-business The Jonsteen Company, and have taken care of it since it arrived on June 30th. As with my other trees, the Serbian Spruce is planted in a reddish-orange plastic terracotta pot. The tree’s age is difficult to determine, but I place it to be two-years-old with six months or so of deviation. Upon arrival, the tree remarkably showed no obvious shipping damage and continues to grow nicely despite the adverse conditions it weathered during the shipping process. 138 Miner, Henry 600 This tree is a Port Orford Cedar that I received from the Californian tree nursery, The Jonsteen Company, on June 30th. Similar to my other trees, the Port Orford Cedar is in a plastic terracotta pot of a reddish-orange color. The tree is notably taller than the other trees I received in the order, yet the age is difficult to gauge. Still, given the varying stages of bark growth on the tree, I would guess it to be deep into its third year of growth. Since arrival, the tree exhibits no outward shipping damage and has grown considerably even since I received it. Some browning is visible on what appears to be the seed leaves from the tree's first few months of growth, but as this is a natural process, I have not taken any corrective action despite its cosmetic detriment. 138 Miner, Henry 601 This tree is a Ponderosa pine that I received from The Jonsteen Company, a Californian tree nursery, on June 30th. As with my other trees, the Ponderosa Pine rests in a plastic terracotta-colored pot. The tree is the tallest of all the trees I received although they were all marketed as being roughly the same age. Regardless, considering the tree’s distinctly different tiers of growth, I consider it to be at least three-years-old. Similar to the Port Orford Cedar, it appears that some needles from the first year of growth are wilting, but as the rest of the tree continues to flourish, I have not worried too much. 138 Miner, Henry 609 This tree is a Japanese Black Pine that I purchased from a Californian nursery by the name of The Jonsteen Company and received on June 30th. The Japanese Black Pine currently grows nicely in a plastic terracotta pot and appears to be roughly one and a half years old. As the tree is still quite young and developing, I was pleased to see that no wilting or browning has occurred and that the tree’s center stem has begun hardening into a sturdy trunk. Horticulture / Trees / 03: Other tree
138 Miner, Henry 611 This tree is a Bald Cypress that I have cared for since I received it from the Jonsteen Company on June 30th. Similar to the Dawn Redwood, the Bald Cypress is separate from the other conifers I have purchased from the company in that it is not an evergreen in our hardiness zone. Regardless, I planted the Bald Cypress the same as the others, in a plastic terracotta-colored pot where it currently sits beside the others in the sun of a south-facing sliding glass door. The tree appears to be quite thin and fragile for its age, but I actually believe this to be typical to the species. Speaking of the tree's age, I currently estimate the Bald Cypress to be one-year-old and in its second year of growth. The tree exhibits minimal browning on some lower branches and has relatively few branches, although I also consider this typical for the species. Blue Palo Alto Plants and Things
138 Miner, Henry 612 This tree is a Dawn Redwood. I received the tree on June 30th of this year from The Jonsteen Company based out of California, and have cared for it since its arrival. The Dawn Redwood is a conifer native to California, much like the other species I am showing, the differentiating factor being that it is a deciduous conifer. The tree is well into its third year of growth with two distinct years of growth clearly visible in its foliage. Although the tree shows some browning on the upper needles that I determined to be from the lack of sunlight it received during the shipping process, the tree is still in excellent condition. After showing, I plan to donate the tree to my 4-H club where it will be given to a new member at the end of each meeting to take care of for the remainder of the month to spread a new love of trees throughout the club.
